At least 10 people were killed and another 30 injured after a vehicle plowed into a crowd of people on Bourbon Street in New Orleans overnight, city officials said. A video has surfaced online from the popular nightlife district, showing police gathered in a cordoned-off section of the street.
The incident occurred at the intersection of Canal and Bourbon Streets during New Year’s Eve celebrations, which traditionally draw large and noisy crowds to New Orleans’ French Quarter. Witnesses reportedly told media that the driver of the vehicle fired a gun and police returned fire.

Witnesses claim the suspect was “wearing body armor” and was “armed with an assault rifle,” according to social media reports.
Dozens of police officers responded to what authorities have declared a “mass casualty event,” and a section of the road has been cordoned off.
Ambulances, emergency vehicles, and a coroner’s vehicle were also seen at the scene.

The injured were transported to area hospitals by ambulance, the city added, and police are continuing to investigate the incident.
No information has been released about the suspect at this time, and it is unclear if they have been apprehended.
