Danijel Ivanović from Kruševac, a physical education teacher, found out overnight that he would no longer be working at the “Stevan Hristić” Music School. Even though he had started the new school year with his class, a notice of termination arrived. Ivanović believes the background is political, because he publicly supported students and, as he says, attended protests in his free time. The school denies that this is a act of retaliation.

After 16 years, teacher Danijel Ivanović found himself on the street. He was handed a decision stating that “as of tomorrow, he should no longer come to work.”

“Behind it lies a political background. And an opinion that differs from theirs,” Ivanović begins his story for N1.

And everything, as he says, started from the moment when students took to the streets, demanding justice in Serbia. Ivanović believes he had an obligation to support them and stand by their side.

“I was at every student protest. But not during working hours, rather when they were organized on weekends. That is probably the reason. I also went to the head of the school administration. He told me he didn’t have time to talk. Even though my livelihood is threatened. I was not informed in time. They waited for the last day to fire me. There is not a single breach of work obligation,” Ivanović says.

The termination decision was signed by director Aleksandar Todorović, whom Ivanović replaced in 2010. The re-election of the director is underway, and Ivanović says he has information that Todorović will not return to teach physical education.

“They are hiring a new person from the employment bureau. That’s what I heard. After everything, I didn’t get a valid answer or reason why this happened,” says this teacher.

The third-year class of the “Stevan Hristić” Music School in Kruševac decided to express dissatisfaction due to the “sudden” departure of, as they say, their “favorite homeroom teacher.”

Aleksandar Todorović, director of the music school, said in a telephone conversation for N1 that Danijel Ivanović received a decision on the termination of employment because he can no longer be his substitute in the position of physical education teacher.

Todorović, as he told us, is returning to teaching after four terms as school director.

He emphasizes that there is no truth to claims of politization in this case.
