Federal agents threw tear gas during a tense confrontation with a gathered crowd in Chicago, after the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced that two suspected illegal immigrants had been arrested following an incident in which they rammed a Border Patrol vehicle with their car and then tried to flee.
The incident occurred during a targeted immigration operation in the state of Illinois. After the collision, the situation quickly escalated when local residents gathered and tried to interfere with the arrest, forcing federal agents to use tear gas to disperse the crowd.
Footage from the scene shows the moment when the suspects’ vehicle crashes into a Border Patrol truck, followed by a chase through the streets of southeast Chicago. Agents managed to stop the suspects only after executing a tactical maneuver (PIT maneuver), after which the suspects attempted to flee on foot.
The Chicago Police Department (CPD) confirmed that it was not directly involved in the DHS operation and that its officers, who were trying to calm the situation, were also exposed to tear gas.
The Department of Homeland Security stated that this case is part of a “disturbing trend” in which suspected illegal immigrants are increasingly offering violent resistance and even using vehicles as weapons against law enforcement officers.
