Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba repeated today his promise to strengthen Japan’s military and deepen the alliance with the U.S. under the leadership of newly elected President Donald Trump.
Ishiba, who spoke at the annual military review held at Camp Asaka in the suburbs of Tokyo, said that the security environment around Japan and the international community has significantly worsened due to rising tensions with China, Russia, and North Korea.
The Prime Minister promised to strengthen Japan’s military power.
He stated that incursions into Japanese airspace by Chinese and Russian military aircraft earlier this year “not only violated Japan’s sovereignty but also jeopardized Japan’s security, and are absolutely unacceptable.”
Ishiba added that Japan is facing growing threats due to increased Chinese military activity around Japan’s coasts and the resumption of missile launches by North Korea.
“As we face the most severe and complex security environment, I will strengthen Japan’s diplomacy and security,” said Ishiba, emphasizing that the Japan-U.S. alliance is key to achieving this goal.

The Prime Minister promised to improve Japan’s ties with the U.S. and closely cooperate with Trump, as agreed in a brief phone call on Thursday.
Ishiba took office on October 1, replacing his unpopular predecessor Fumio Kishida, but his ruling coalition suffered a setback in the recent parliamentary elections.
The new Prime Minister may face challenges in implementing his planned policies and budget proposals in the coming months.
After its defeat in World War II, Japan prioritized economic recovery over defense in accordance with its constitution, which renounces war. However, in recent years, it has consistently strengthened its defense capabilities.
