Victory Day in the Great War was solemnly marked today at the King Peter I Foundation in Oplenac, in the presence of members of the Karađorđević Royal Family, the clergy, and citizens.

Wreaths were laid on the graves of King Peter I and King Alexander I by Their Royal Highnesses Crown Prince Alexander II, together with his son Hereditary Prince Philip, Princess Danica, little Prince Stefan, as well as their relatives Prince Mihailo and Princess Ljubica.

Metropolitan Jovan of Šumadija and the clergy served a memorial service for the blessed late Kings and heroes of the Great War, reminding those present of the significance of the sacrifice made by the Serbian people in the fight for freedom and survival.

Crown Prince Alexander emphasized that “freedom is the holiest victory that our ancestors bequeathed to us, and that our people, led by their King Peter I and Regent Alexander, made the greatest sacrifice to bring victory to the world.”

In his address, Hereditary Prince Philip highlighted the deep connection of Serbian history with the ideals of freedom, honor, and justice:

“Today we are here at Oplenac, before the graves of my great-great-grandfather King Peter I and my great-grandfather King Alexander I, to remember those who gave their lives for the freedom of Serbia and for peace in Europe and the world. The Serbian people made an enormous sacrifice in the Great War. They went through the most difficult sufferings, but they never lost faith in justice and freedom. That faith led us to victory and to the renewal of our state,” Prince Philip said.

“King Peter the First was a symbol of freedom and national justice. King Alexander the First continued his work and united the peoples who fought for the same ideals,” the Hereditary Prince pointed out, emphasizing that their deeds oblige us even today to preserve peace, honor, and unity.

“May this day be a reminder that freedom is the greatest value, and that our task is to preserve it through work, knowledge, and respect. Glory to the heroes of the Great War! Long live Serbia!” concluded Prince Philip.

The ceremony at Oplenac, a symbol of Serbian statehood and national unity, was held in a dignified spirit of remembrance and gratitude towards the generations whose lives paved the way for a free Serbia.
