U.S. Border Patrol agents chased a cyclist through downtown Chicago on Sunday after he provoked them and repeatedly shouted that he was not a U.S. citizen.
The incident was recorded by Christopher Souet, who stated that there was no physical contact before the chase began, only verbal provocations. In the video, the man can be heard shouting “I am not a US citizen” and “come on,” while his phone drops at one point. An agent shouts to him, “You dropped your phone,” after which the cyclist picks up the device and flees. It is currently unknown whether he was apprehended or whether charges were filed against him.
On the same day, dozens of armed federal agents were seen at the busiest locations in Chicago, including Wacker Drive, Michigan Avenue, Millennium Park, Riverwalk, and River North. Among them was the Border Patrol Chief, Gregory Bovino, who told citizens: “We work for you.”
Their presence drew condemnation from local leaders. Congressman Jesús “Chuy” García said that Chicago would not tolerate federal pressure, while Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker announced a press conference to condemn the Border Patrol’s actions in the state.
