BECAUSE OF HIM WE WRITE IN CYRILLIC TODAY: We celebrate Ćirilovdan, a holiday dedicated to Saint Cyril the Slav!

Saint Cyril the Slav was born in Thessaloniki to wealthy and affluent parents.

Orthodox believers today celebrate Saint Cyril the Slav, a holiday also known as Ćirilovdan. Serbs still use the Cyrillic alphabet today, which was named precisely after Saint Cyril.

Although today is known as Ćirilovdan, it is not marked with a red letter in the calendar of the Serbian Orthodox Church.

Today is celebrated in memory of the death of Saint Cyril, but also in memory of when this saint convinced the Khazar Emperor Kagan that Christ’s faith is the only correct one.

The Serbian Orthodox Church also celebrates the great holiday of Saints Cyril and Methodius on May 24, and that day is marked with a red letter in the calendar.

Saint Cyril died in 869 in Rome, and today he is still considered one of the most important not only Orthodox, but Christian saints as well.
