“For now, we have stopped all payments from the Growth Plan because Serbia has regressed in the field of the judiciary, and as long as they do not fix that, they will not be able to receive financial support from the EU,” European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos stated yesterday at the University of Fribourg in Switzerland.

Kos gave a lecture at the University of Fribourg titled “How Geopolitics Changed EU Enlargement.” Answering questions from the audience, she reflected on the situation in Serbia, reports savremenapolitika.com.

“Serbia today is very polarized. It has been a candidate for membership for more than ten years, and unfortunately, we see regression, especially in the part relating to the values I spoke about earlier, the rule of law, democracy, freedom of expression, and especially media freedom. There is a future for Serbia in the European Union, but the course must change,” said Kos.

She noted that geopolitical orientation is also important.

“We have a rule: before becoming an EU member, a country’s alignment with the EU’s foreign and security policy must be 100 percent. That means you cannot sit on two chairs. At some point, Serbia will have to decide what is most important for its development,” she added.

Kos assessed that recent processes in Serbia have shown that “there are forces that truly disagree with how the government and the president rule the country.”

“Once again, we are willing to help, but Serbia will have to make a move,” she added.

The adoption of the so-called Mrdić laws in January 2026 led to sharp criticism from Brussels. In a report last week, the Venice Commission presented a series of recommendations based on which these laws should be changed, while the European Commission stated that it expects Serbia to implement these recommendations as soon as possible.
