A knife attack has occurred at a vocational school in Essen, Germany, and police and emergency services are already at the scene of the attack, writes the German newspaper Bild.

According to information from the Bild newspaper, a student attacked a professor with a knife at an educational center in the Nordviertel district of Essen (North Rhine-Westphalia).

The stab wound was reportedly in the stomach area. The victim is seriously injured and is currently being treated. She is expected to undergo emergency surgery at a university clinic soon. It is not yet known whether her life is in danger.


ATTACKER ON THE RUN – SPECIAL UNITS SEARCHING THE SCHOOL

The perpetrator is on the run, and it is currently unclear whether he attacked any other people. Police have been on the scene since around 9:30 AM, and the building has been surrounded by heavily armed officers in protective gear.

“We are on-site with a strong force,” a police spokesperson stated.

Special units (SEK), who have just arrived, are expected to search the school premises soon. A police helicopter is also currently circling the complex.

The Essen police have appealed to citizens to widely avoid that part of the city. It is still unclear whether there is a danger of the incident spreading.

The vocational school is located in an educational complex between Blücherstrasse, Unzurstrasse, and Altenessenerstrasse in the northern part of Essen. Other schools and educational institutions are also nearby.
