It is official: Chicago is the most beautiful city in the United States. In fact, it is the fourth most beautiful city on the planet, according to a new ranking of the world’s most beautiful cities.
Time Out magazine asked more than 24,000 city residents around the world whether they would describe their city as “beautiful”. As expected, Chicago received a beauty rating of 77%, with only Sydney (78%), Edinburgh (84%) and Cape Town (86%) ranking ahead of it.
Out of the 19 cities on the list of the world’s most beautiful, Chicago surpassed some serious competitors. Lisbon came immediately behind Chicago with a beauty rating of 74%, followed by Paris (68%), Stockholm (68%), Porto (67%) and Medellín (66%).
Factors such as an abundance of green spaces, walkability, architectural significance and waterfront views played a role in the ranking. Fortunately, Chicago has all of that in abundance.
Earlier this year, the “Windy City” was also named the second-best city in the world for green spaces, receiving a score of 89% for its more than 600 parks spread across over 8,800 acres.
But wait, that’s not all! In March, Chicago was named the 41st best city in the world overall. Praised for its diversity, inclusiveness, pride in local neighborhoods and deep-rooted dedication to the arts, it ranked higher than urban centers such as San Francisco, Dublin and Buenos Aires.
The influx of major cultural openings, including the Obama Presidential Center and the Pokémon Fossil Museum at the Field Museum, certainly helped the city secure its place on the list.
Rankings like this remind us of the incredible beauty, culture and community that we are fortunate to have in our own backyard. On any given day, we can step outside and visit a renowned museum, walk through a world-class park, watch a top-quality theater performance or enjoy a Michelin-starred meal. We truly have it all.
The fact that Chicago was named the fourth most beautiful city in the world comes as absolutely no surprise to Chicagoans themselves. This ranking simply makes it official.
