Canada’s ruling party has elected Mark Carney as its new leader and future prime minister, as the country faces tensions over U.S. trade policies and Donald Trump.
After receiving a long ovation from Liberal Party activists, Carney immediately condemned statements made by the American Republican president.
“Americans want our resources, our water, our land, our country,” Carney warned after his election victory.
The U.S. president has launched a trade war with his neighbor by imposing tariffs on Canadian products and continues to express his desire for Canada to become the “51st U.S. state.”
“These are dark days, dark days brought by a country (the U.S.) that we can no longer trust,” said the new Canadian leader, stating that “Trump must not be allowed to win.”
Carney (59), a former banker and political newcomer, pledged to “build a new economy and establish new trade relationships.”

He will officially take over as prime minister in the coming days, following the transition of power from Justin Trudeau, who announced his resignation in early January after nearly a decade in office.
However, Carney may not remain in office for long, as Canada is set to hold elections no later than October.
On Sunday, Carney secured 85.9% of the votes from Liberal Party activists, far ahead of former Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland, who received only 8% of the vote.
