Political commentator and former Fox News host Tucker Carlson harshly mocked Dr. Anthony Fauci’s testimony before a Senate committee, calling him “a sad and frightened old man” after the former top U.S. epidemiologist repeatedly invoked the Fifth Amendment to avoid self-incrimination.

On his podcast, Carlson said Fauci was “trembling with fear” during questioning and appeared to be a man “trapped in his own narcissism.” He was particularly critical of the moment when the former health official read a prepared statement invoking his constitutional right not to answer questions that could incriminate him.

Carlson continued his criticism on X.

“Most people believed Anthony Fauci was either a brilliant scientist or the evil mastermind behind everything—or perhaps both. His personal diary shows that he was actually just a vain man obsessed with media attention.”

Invoking the Fifth Amendment and the Threat of Prison

The scene in the Senate was highly tense. The chairman of the Senate Homeland Security Committee, Republican Senator Rand Paul, had previously released more than 1,000 pages of Fauci’s private pandemic-era diaries, claiming that the notes directly contradicted what he had said publicly.

Fauci refused to answer more than 100 questions, accusing Senator Paul of having an unhealthy obsession.

“The senator has an obvious obsession with sending me to prison at any cost. I followed my lawyer’s advice and exercised my constitutional right, even though being pushed into invoking the Fifth Amendment deeply pains me,” said Dr. Anthony Fauci, former health adviser.

The hearing descended into chaos when Senator Paul ordered security to remove Fauci’s attorney, David Schertler, after he attempted to speak without being recognized. Paul announced that the Senate would vote as early as next week on whether to hold Fauci in contempt of Congress.

Former President Joe Biden pardoned Fauci in January 2025 for any potential federal offenses committed before 2014, but Republicans argue that the pardon does not protect him from new allegations of giving false testimony under oath.

Scientists Say It Is a “Witch Hunt”

While conservatives are calling for criminal prosecution, Democrats and part of the scientific community continue to stand firmly behind Fauci. Senator Maggie Hassan said the entire hearing was “nothing more than a political trap,” while more than 150 leading epidemiologists and scientists signed an appeal stating that there is no credible evidence of wrongdoing and urging politicians to end what they described as a “witch hunt.”

The disputed diaries reportedly contain detailed accounts of Fauci’s meetings with politicians, media appearances, and interactions with public figures during the lockdowns. While the former Fox News host cites them as evidence of an unhealthy desire for fame, Senator Paul argues that the notes clearly show Fauci suspected from the very beginning that the virus had leaked from the Wuhan laboratory, while publicly dismissing that theory as a conspiracy theory.

Fauci continues to reject all allegations that he misled Congress, maintaining that the scientific evidence still overwhelmingly indicates that COVID spread from animals to humans.
