In Belgrade today, on the occasion of May 9th, Victory Day over Fascism in World War II, the “Immortal Regiment” march is being held. The column started from the Vuk Monument toward the Cemetery of the Liberators of Belgrade, where wreaths will be laid at 11 a.m. to mark the 81st anniversary of the victory over fascism.

Participants of the “Immortal Regiment” march are carrying photos of their family members who participated in the fight against fascism, as well as their ancestors who participated in earlier wars for the liberation of Serbia.

Participants are also carrying flags of Serbia and Russia, as well as flags of the former SFRY, the Soviet Union, and units that participated in the liberation of Serbia from fascism.

Movement originated in Russia

The “Immortal Regiment” is an international civil-patriotic movement for the preservation of the culture of memory of those who gave their lives in the fight against fascism in World War II.

The movement originated in Russia in 2014, and the idea quickly took hold, spreading to other cities in the world.

Victory Day over Fascism, May 9th, is observed in memory of the capitulation of Nazi Germany in 1945 and the end of World War II in Europe.
