The Central Election Commission (CEC) of Bosnia and Herzegovina announced today general elections in BiH for October 4, 2026.
The elections have been announced for the Presidency of BiH, the House of Representatives of the Parliamentary Assembly of BiH, the House of Representatives of the Parliament of the Federation of BiH, the National Assembly of the Republika Srpska, for the president and vice-presidents of the RS, and the cantonal assemblies in the Federation of BiH.
Biometric voter identification, scanning of ballots, and video surveillance should be introduced at around 5,000 polling stations during the general elections, which should enable a faster, more efficient, and more reliable electoral process.
For this job, worth 38 million euros, the American company Smartmatic was selected in a tender, with which, according to information from the CEC the day before the announcement of the elections, a contract for the procurement of equipment has not yet been signed. The deadline for equipment delivery is 139 days, according to Radio Free Europe.
The introduction of new technologies was imposed by the High Representative Christian Schmidt through amendments to the Election Law in 2024, after political parties were unable to agree on the reform of the electoral process for years.
