Uroš Stevanović has submitted his irrevocable resignation from the position of head coach of the Serbian water polo team.
He released a statement.
“I have decided to submit my irrevocable resignation from the position of head coach of the Serbian water polo national team. The decision is difficult and inevitable.
I believe that after the arrival of new people at the helm of our Federation, it is also time for new people by the pool, in the professional leadership of Serbia’s best team. Our visions of the future diverge significantly, and I do not want such a situation to lead to any problems within the team and the Federation.
In recent days, we have all witnessed the public appearances of the new president of the VSS which are completely contrary to my views, as well as the feeling of the entire nation toward the Olympic and European champions.

It is precisely out of a desire to protect the players who deserved the gold medals and brought them to Serbia, to the joy of the people, that I am resigning. I do not want to allow any public bickering and ‘expert analyses,’ and I see that we are heading toward that by the will of others. For me, the boys in the pool are true champions, and I believe my resignation will lead to a slightly more realistic outlook and perhaps even some praise, instead of sudden critical reviews. At the same time, it is an opportunity for some new people to get a chance, just as I once earned the greatest honor.
Behind us in the past three years remain Olympic and European gold, as well as fourth place at the World Championship. I am proud of every minute of my mandate as head coach, and I owe special thanks to all my associates and players, without whom these successes would not exist.
I note that after this, I will no longer address this topic in media statements and interviews, nor will I enter into any polemics. A cordial and sporting greeting,” reads his statement.
