It started as a completely crazy idea by two friends who had never made a single doughnut in their lives, and ended with a historical feat that the entire region is buzzing about!
–Let’s make 100,000 doughnuts for the Easter campaign.
–What do you mean – 100,000 doughnuts?! Have you ever made even one?
–No, so what?
The most beautiful things often happen just like this, with one crazy and seemingly impossible idea. This conversation recently took place between two members of the Charity Organization Serbs for Serbs, and that is how the largest Easter campaign ever – Doughnuts from the Block – began to develop.
Two months later, more than 1,000 volunteers managed to make more than 100,000 doughnuts in less than 24 hours. The doughnuts were distributed in front of more than 100 churches throughout Serbia, Republika Srpska, and Montenegro, on the holidays of Lazarus Saturday and Palm Sunday.
The campaign is taking place with the support of the Serbian Orthodox Church and with the blessing of His Holiness the Serbian Patriarch Mr. Porfirije. The collected funds are intended to help families in Kosovo and Metohija. In Belgrade, Doughnuts from the Block was organized in cooperation with the Religious Charitable Guardianship of the Archbishopric of Belgrade-Karlovci, to whose church kitchen a portion of the funds will be directed.
The largest number of doughnuts, an incredible 60,000, was made during a large work action in a hall in New Belgrade, as part of which more than 500 people, tirelessly and continuously, made doughnuts for a full 24 hours. It was an incredible experience, with many obstacles and challenges that had to be solved on the fly. Some volunteers did not sleep for a single minute during that entire time, but they say it was worth it because they will remember this campaign for the rest of their lives!
“During the realization, we wondered if there is a Guinness record for the number of doughnuts made in a short period of time. We realized that one exists and that, as far as we were able to find, it is far smaller than the goal we set,” stated one of the initiators of the campaign.
The campaign also had a huge impact in Republika Srpska, where it was held at more than 60 locations, as well as in numerous places in Montenegro, Switzerland, Austria, and Germany. Since the campaign is still ongoing, the total number of locations is expected to exceed 200.
So far, more than 150,000 euros in aid has been collected!
Year after year, the Charity Organization Serbs for Serbs sets records for the number of families helped and donations collected. So far, it has helped more than 3,800 families across the Balkans and collected 23 million euros in donations over 20 years of activity.
