A twenty-five-year-old girl passed away on March 13 at the Clinical Center of Serbia. Her parents claim that she was treated negligently and that the discharge list was falsified. Therefore, they have filed criminal charges against five doctors.
“Sanja was wonderful, with a big heart, she loved company very much, she loved socializing very much,” her mother tells N1.
Sanja also loved her dog very much, who is still waiting for her in their shared room. They were inseparable until February 2, when, due to abdominal pain, Sanja went to the Emergency Center for help.
“I know that she immediately pointed out to them that she had five previous inflammations of the pancreas and that day they only did lab work and an ultrasound; however, even the blood count results already indicated that she had major problems,” says Gordana Vasiljević, Sanja’s mother.
Regardless, the doctors decided to release Sanja home the same day.
“A young doctor comes out to me and I say, ‘Sir, you cannot discharge her, please do a CT scan,’ because during the previous inflammations—I followed every single one—until a CT was done, the ultrasound doesn’t show what is actually happening, and he shuts me down—’I consulted with someone,’ then he cites some titles to me and says, ‘we don’t want to expose her to radiation,'” says Vasiljević.
The situation worsened during the night. The pain intensified, so early in the morning on February 3, Sanja went back to the Emergency Center, where she was admitted.
“And again they do an ultrasound, they draw her blood, you can see by the blood counts that the inflammation is starting, and they don’t do a CT scan on the 3rd at all, all day, and they only remembered the day after tomorrow, the 4th, to do a CT, and on the CT they discover that necrosis has already occurred, that a vein located next to the pancreas is inflamed, which means that precious hours were missed,” Sanja’s mother says.
Gordana claims that they first kept her daughter in the blue zone, then in the metabolic department, even though the situation was urgent. Sanja remained in the hospital for 41 days, and during that time, her mother says, she contracted two bacteria. After that, doctors decided to operate on the twenty-five-year-old girl on March 2.
“After the operation comes Acinetobacter, that third cursed bacteria, which leads her into a septic state; she fights it until the 13th and the girl dies, my child, my heart, my everything in the world…” she states.
In the end, Sanja’s family received assurances from the doctors that they did everything they could.
“If they did everything so correctly and I am not right, why are they falsifying the discharge list? ‘Upon admission, the patient was completely examined, a CT scan was performed’—no, it was performed the next day at 9:41 AM; ‘the patient was then transferred to intensive care unit B’—no, she was transferred only the following afternoon. Those initial omissions created the whole chaos and led to the fatal outcome for my child,” states Vasiljević.
Regarding this case, N1 sent an inquiry to the Clinical Center of Serbia, but they did not respond. Sanja’s family did not receive answers either, so they filed criminal charges against five doctors of the Clinical Center of Serbia.
“Would they allow their children to end up like that? It’s terrible,” she says.
