U.S. President Donald Trump claimed that Iran desperately wants to reach a deal, but cannot openly show it because its leaders fear reactions from their own regime and the American side.

Speaking about the situation in the Middle East, Trump said that Tehran is negotiating and “very much wants to reach a deal,” but is afraid to admit it publicly.

“They are negotiating and very much want to reach a deal, but they are afraid to say it because they think their own people will kill them. They are also afraid that we will kill them,” Trump said. He added that he has never seen a leader of any country who wants to hold that position so little as the Iranian leader, according to Index.hr.

“There has never been a leader of a country who wanted that position less than the one leading Iran. I don’t want it. We hear some of the things they say, we hear them very clearly. They say: ‘We would like you to be the next supreme leader.’ No, thank you, I don’t want it,” Trump said.

United States, while Trump simultaneously claims that progress is being made and that a deal is possible.

Trump has previously made similar statements in his recognizable style. At the end of April last year, responding to a question about who should be the next pope after the death of Pope Francis, he jokingly told reporters that he “would like to be pope” and that it would be his “first choice.”

Two Iranian officials removed from “target list”

The United States and Israel have temporarily removed Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf from the assassination target list, American media reported.

According to the Wall Street Journal, citing unnamed U.S. officials, the decision was made as part of efforts to launch peace negotiations between Washington and Tehran.

Sources said the two Iranian officials were removed from the list for several days, as the Trump administration signaled openness to diplomatic talks.

However, officials familiar with the situation assess that there are only small chances of success for the talks due to significant differences in the negotiating positions of the United States and Iran.
