The death of American financier and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein should be re-investigated, said pathologist Michael Baden, who attended the autopsy in 2019.

In an interview with the British “Telegraph,” Baden stated that he is not convinced by the official conclusion of the New York Office of the Chief Medical Examiner that Jeffrey Epstein committed suicide by hanging while awaiting trial on charges of sex trafficking.

  • My opinion is that the death most likely occurred as a result of pressure from strangulation, not hanging – said Baden, who was engaged as an observer on behalf of Epstein’s family.

He added that, in light of new information published in recent years, there is grounds for an additional investigation into the cause and manner of death.

  • At the time the medical examiner performed the autopsy, we both agreed that, based on the autopsy report and available information, more information was needed to determine the cause and manner of death – Baden said.

He pointed out that his professional findings after the autopsy on August 11, 2019 were “inconclusive.”

However, Baden claims that five days after Epstein’s death certificate was released, the official report listed hanging and suicide as the cause of death, based on a decision made by the then chief medical examiner of New York, although, according to Baden’s claims, she did not attend the autopsy.

Sampson previously rejected his allegations and stated that she firmly stands by her conclusion.

Epstein was found dead in his cell in August 2019, while he was being held in custody in New York.

His death sparked numerous controversies, including questions about prison supervision and technical failures, such as malfunctioning cameras and delays in regular inmate checks.

“Three neck fractures are rarer in suicide”

Baden pointed to three fractures in the neck, including a fracture of the hyoid bone, claiming that such findings, in his experience, are rarer in suicides by hanging and require a detailed investigation of possible homicide.

Epstein’s attorneys, meanwhile, claimed that Dr. Baden’s concerns are in line with theirs and that they are “not satisfied” with the medical examiner’s findings.

  • I have not seen any evidence of further investigation, nothing that would indicate further inquiry into the cause of death. The diagnosis was made several days after the cause of death was first stated – Baden said, adding that Sampson’s ruling was simply “accepted.”

According to him, in unusual or highly suspicious cases it can sometimes take several weeks or months to determine the cause of death.

  • That was my opinion at the time and I still stand by it. The autopsy findings are much more consistent with crushing caused by homicidal strangulation than with suicide by hanging – he told the British newspaper.

“This indicates murder”

Baden was one of the first people to express concern about the ruling. In August 2019 he told “Fox News” that “the evidence points to murder, not suicide.”

According to the official report, it was determined that the noose made of orange cloth found at the scene was not the one used by Epstein in the alleged suicide.

Baden stated that he noticed this during the autopsy and that at the time he was concerned that “the noose did not match the injury.”

He also cited unusual handling at the crime scene, saying that key evidence was lost due to mistakes made while handling Epstein’s body.

The U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Department of Justice previously stated that there is no evidence that Epstein was murdered and that it was a suicide.

Baden, who worked on multiple high-profile cases during his career, reiterated that his findings remain “incomplete,” but that the circumstances and forensic details justify a new review of the cause of death.
