Danijela Masijas, a young woman from Colombia who moved to Serbia for love, quickly realized that life in the Balkans is very different from what she was used to. While she noted that she was warmly welcomed, certain everyday habits and customs in Serbia completely surprised her.
She revealed that the differences are most noticeable in people’s behavior, attitudes toward appearance, and social interactions. Some situations initially seemed unusual but also charming to her. She shared her impressions openly, which drew significant attention on social media.
She then highlighted three things that surprised her the most upon arriving in Serbia:
“When I arrived in Serbia from Colombia, these three things really surprised me. People look at you a lot, too much, I would say. But here, it’s normal. In Colombia, that’s very rare. Women walk in high heels, and it doesn’t matter if it’s winter. I give 10 out of 10 to all Serbian women who do that! Everyone toasts with rakija, even at breakfast. Cheers, my Serbs,” Danijela said in an Instagram video, taking a sip of rakija, and then invited everyone to tell her “what else a Latina should know when coming to Serbia.”
Many people from Serbia joked:
“They should know that Serbian men adore Colombians,” “Serbs always notice beautiful women,” “They should know they are always welcome,” “They need to know how to make sarma,” wrote several commenters.
