Students of all four grades of the First High School in Niš, “Stevan Sremac,” are boycotting classes starting today.
Last week, third- and fourth-year students presented two demands to the new principal of this school, which she did not fulfill by yesterday afternoon’s deadline. Due to the failure to meet the demands, students began a class boycott today, and they were joined by first- and second-year students from the school.
The previous principal was dismissed, according to the school’s students’ parents, by order of the minister because she supported the students, after which a new principal was appointed who, according to them, did not prepare the school for the new academic year.
As she brought in unknown teachers to replace 13 people whose contracts she did not extend, the homeroom teacher of a fourth-year class complained that a person not registered as a teacher was teaching physical education to the children. After that, the principal reported her to the police, and the woman became ill, so she went on sick leave.
The fourth-year students then had two demands for the new principal: to explain why the teachers’ contracts were not extended and to state who the new lecturers she brought to the school are and where they came from. The deadline was yesterday afternoon. The principal did not fulfill the demands, and the students entered into a school-wide class boycott.
