Students in the blockade of the Faculty of Philosophy in Novi Sad said last night that the dean of that faculty, Milivoje Alanović, is directly responsible for the conflict between the police and students and citizens.
“Milivoje Alanović, who did not want to withdraw the police and allow the students to enter the faculty, is directly responsible for the conflict between students and citizens with the police,” the students said in a statement on social networks.
“Sound cannon and tear gas on students and their colleagues. Milivoje Alanović, is this your dialogue? Do you have any dignity,” the students wrote.
Strong cordons of police and gendarmerie pushed citizens away from the entrance to the Faculty of Philosophy in Novi Sad to a nearby parking lot, which is 50 meters from the building entrance.
The cordons number several hundred police officers and gendarmes in full riot gear.
Police and gendarmerie forces beat citizens tonight in front of the Faculty of Philosophy building in Novi Sad, and during the intervention, they beat the demonstrators and sprayed pepper spray in their eyes.
Tonight around 10:20 p.m., a pushing match began between the citizens and the police cordon that was standing in front of the entrance to the Faculty of Philosophy and was not allowing students and professors to enter the faculty building.
Then strong gendarmerie forces intervened, who beat the demonstrators, threw them to the ground, and sprayed pepper spray in their eyes.
Different pyrotechnics were also used; students claim that police officers threw stun grenades and fireworks and that many were injured.
It is currently quiet in front of the Faculty of Philosophy, and the demonstrators are shouting various insults at the police officers and gendarmes.
The gathered students and citizens had previously chanted “Remove the police,” after the deadline that the students in the blockade had set for Dean Milivoje Alanović for the police to withdraw from and in front of the faculty building had expired at 10 p.m.
In front of the police cordon, which was equipped for riot control, stood professors, as well as war veterans and other citizens.
Some of the demonstrators have helmets on their heads, and some also have gas masks and antiviral masks.
“Lower your shields!” the crowd shouted at the police.
The academic network Slobodan univerzitet Novi Sad demanded tonight that Dean Milivoje Alanović resign “as soon as possible” because he called the police into the campus and the faculty building.
“Due to personal responsibility for violating the autonomy of the university, we demand that the dean of the Faculty of Philosophy, Milivoje Alanović, resign as soon as possible,” Slobodan univerzitet stated in a press release.
They reminded that the inviolability of academic space is guaranteed by law.
“The police forces present on campus are absolutely disproportionate to any, imagined, fear for security that Alanović is talking about. The extended stay of members of the Ministry of Internal Affairs in the faculty building is not based on security assessments, but on the authorities’ desire to establish such a procedure as a model for dealing with students,” Slobodan univerzitet assessed.
They added that students and professors are “witnesses to history” as they watch the entrance to the Faculty of Philosophy in Novi Sad being blocked by a gendarmerie cordon and how their shifts have been changing for more than 24 hours.
“While students and professors cannot enter the building, gendarmes in full riot gear are passing through the central reading room of the faculty,” the press release states.
They called on all deans, vice-deans, and vice-rectors from the faculties that are part of the University of Novi Sad to clearly state their position on the police presence on campus and to stand up for the preservation of the autonomy and integrity of the university.
