As can be seen on the website of the Archdiocese of Belgrade, the new Pope Leo XIV visited Belgrade last year, from June 24th to 27th.

As Robert Francis Prevost, a Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church and Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops, he attended the plenary assembly of the Council of European Bishops’ Conferences entitled “Pilgrims of Hope. For a Synodal and Missionary Church.”

At the assembly, he gave a presentation on the topic of “The dimension of evangelization and the mission of the Church in Europe,” where, starting from the events of recent weeks, he reflected on the European elections and global crises, including the war in Ukraine and the Middle East.

Drawing on the vision of Saint Augustine, for the new Pope, the key was “to look at the Incarnation of Jesus, which is lived in the Eucharistic celebration and transmitted into daily life, taking care of the poor, migrants, people in need,” but above all “putting into practice the way of love characteristic of Jesus Christ.”

The same statement notes that the participants of this conference had a meeting with the Serbian Patriarch Porfirije.

In a separate news item on the archdiocese’s website, information can be found that the new Pope led a holy mass in the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Belgrade. The mass preceded a concert by the Radio Television of Serbia Big Band entitled “An Evening of Film Music.”

The concert was organized on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the re-establishment of the Archdiocese of Belgrade.
