Bulgaria’s acting President Iliana Yotova, who according to exit polls won the second round of the presidential election, thanked citizens and political parties that supported her candidacy this evening, saying that voters had given preference to dialogue, cooperation, and coordination among institutions over confrontation and division.
She emphasized that every vote matters and that a serious analysis of citizens’ concerns and expectations lies ahead.
Yotova described her election campaign as positive, stating that her team had not used hate speech, confrontation, or divisive rhetoric.
According to her, conversations with citizens focused on income, peace, and the challenges facing Bulgaria, Bulgarian Euronews reported.
Yotova criticized the campaign of her rival, Andrey Gurov, questioning who had guided him toward what she described as an extremely aggressive tone toward her and her presidential team.
“Citizens have sent a message with their votes that they do not want this kind of politics. Such an approach is unacceptable in elections in Bulgaria. They supported a policy of dialogue and seeking solutions, with coordination with institutions in order to make good decisions, rather than a policy of obstructing everyone else,” Yotova said.
She also pointed out that Gurov had congratulated her on her presidential election victory over the phone, Bulgarian Novinite reported.
Asked whether anyone would influence her future decisions as president, Yotova replied that she makes political decisions independently.
“After nearly 30 years of a political career, I believe that no man has been born who can tell me what to do,” Yotova declared.
Yotova is leading in the second round of the presidential election in the country with around 51 percent of the vote, while her opponent, former caretaker Prime Minister Andrey Gurov, received between 43 and 45 percent, according to the results of two exit polls published after polling stations closed today at 8 p.m. local time.
