The President of the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals, Graciela Gatti Santana, has issued an order for a report by independent experts on the current health status of General Ratko Mladić to be compiled no later than Friday, May 1, RTRS reports.
This report must contain all relevant diagnoses, prognoses, and treatment options, as well as an assessment of his life expectancy and an analysis of the adequacy of the care he receives in the UN detention unit or prison hospital.
Santana emphasized that under the current circumstances, it is necessary to obtain an additional expert opinion to determine whether there are justified humanitarian grounds for his release.
This decision followed after Mladić’s legal team submitted an official request for provisional release on April 23, pointing to a dramatic deterioration in his condition.
General Mladić suffered a stroke on April 10, which further complicated existing serious neurological, cardiovascular, and nephrological problems.
Since 2024, he has been in the detention hospital in The Hague under palliative care, and the Mechanism has so far repeatedly rejected defense requests to allow him temporary freedom for treatment in Serbia.
