A man (41) was brutally beaten and stabbed in the center of Munich, and then left lying motionless with severe injuries, including a broken jaw. Two young men of Serbian origin, aged 18 and 19, were arrested for the attack, while police are currently investigating the conduct of two onlookers who failed to react.
The attack occurred on March 29, around 6:10 a.m., at the well-known Stachus square. According to the German newspaper Bild, everything was preceded by a conflict with a group of punks. Allegedly, the older of the suspects first struck one of them, after which the situation escalated. When the 41-year-old man tried to calm the conflict, he became the target of the attack and ended up brutally beaten.
According to investigation reports, the attackers beat and trampled him even while he lay unconscious on the ground. At one point, it is suspected, they even took a selfie with the severely injured man.
Particularly disturbing is the fact that two onlookers were in the immediate vicinity and did not attempt to help. Surveillance camera footage shows them leaning against a wall, calmly eating fast food and watching the violence without any reaction.
The attackers were quickly found and arrested at the S-Bahn station in Munich-Feldmohing, and the prosecution is conducting an investigation for attempted murder. Simultaneously, proceedings have been initiated against the two onlookers for failure to provide assistance, as they did not call emergency services nor did they attempt to help the injured person.
“The increasingly frequent brutal violence in public places leaves me speechless. It is unacceptable to attack a man who is trying to calm a situation without fear. There must be zero tolerance for such behavior,” stated Daniela Ludwig, State Secretary at the Federal Ministry of the Interior.
