Nis students are protesting in front of the Faculty of Philosophy building because three departments from this faculty have officially become part of the Faculty of Serbian Studies. Students who have so far studied history, Russian studies, and Serbian studies, as reported by the N1 reporter, are not sure from which faculty they will receive their diplomas.
Students and professors gathered today in front of the Faculty of Philosophy building in Nis, at the invitation of students dissatisfied with the latest decisions concerning the future of three departments of this higher education institution. Due to the protest, certain streets in the vicinity of the faculty are closed to traffic.
Students from other faculties joined those gathered, as well as professors, providing support to colleagues from the most affected departments.
As the N1 reporter reports, the situation further complicated after the change of the faculty management – former dean Natalija Jovanovic was considered a person close to students and critical of the authorities, and shortly after the expiration of her mandate, decisions followed that caused a stir in the academic community, reports the N1 reporter.

In the meantime, the government initiated the founding of a new “Faculty of Serbian Studies,” which would be created by separating three departments from the Faculty of Philosophy. Milan Lazarevic, president of the Movement for the People and the State in Nis, backed by the SNS and Aleksandar Vucic, is mentioned as one of the initiators.
The new institution, the N1 reporter points out, until recently had neither adequate premises nor clear signage, but only a modest plaque. However, according to available information, since March 27, there has been an accreditation and a work permit issued by the competent national accreditation body.
Additional concern was caused by information that since yesterday, students have been unable to register for exams in those three departments.
The biggest problem for the students at the moment is uncertainty – they do not know whether they will receive diplomas from the Faculty of Philosophy or from the newly formed Faculty of Serbian Studies, considering that, as they state, the Faculty of Philosophy has lost its work permit for those three departments.
