Former Florida Attorney General replaces nominee Matt Gaetz, who withdrew his candidacy for Attorney General hours earlier.

President-elect Trump announced on Thursday evening that by nominating former Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi, he is appointing the new Attorney General of the United States.

Trump’s latest Cabinet choice replaces Matt Gaetz, former Florida representative and nominee for Attorney General, who withdrew his candidacy on Thursday after his nomination caused a “distraction” due to allegations that he had paid underage girls for sex.

“Pam has been a prosecutor for nearly 20 years, where she was very tough on violent criminals and made the streets safer for families in Florida,” Trump wrote in his statement. “Then, as the first woman to serve as Florida’s Attorney General, she worked to combat the deadly drug trade and reduce the tragedy of fentanyl-related deaths that have devastated many families across our country. She did an incredible job, so I asked her to serve on our Opioid and Drug Abuse Committee during my first term — we saved many lives!”

“For too long, the politically weaponized Department of Justice was turned against me and other Republicans — But that will no longer be the case. Pam will refocus DOJ on its original mission — fighting crime and making America safe again,” he continued. “I’ve known Pam for many years — She is smart, tough, and a fighter who puts AMERICA FIRST, and she will do an excellent job as Attorney General!”

Minutes after the announcement, Gaetz posted on X that Bondi is an “outstanding choice” for Attorney General, nominated by Trump.

“Pam and I worked closely together when she was Florida’s Attorney General, and I was the chairman of the Criminal Justice Committee in the state legislature,” Gaetz wrote. “She is a proven attorney, an inspiring leader, and a fighter for all Americans. She will bring the necessary reforms to DOJ.”
