The Democrats’ victory in the U.S. congressional elections could bring serious problems for President Donald Trump and members of his administration. After Democrats won majorities in the House of Representatives and the Senate, their representatives announced the possibility of launching investigations and summoning officials to hearings. Democratic Congressman Robert Garcia sent a brief but forceful message: “Lawyer up!”
According to Fox News, reactions from American politicians came immediately after it became clear that Republicans had lost control of both chambers of Congress in the elections held on November 3.
While Republicans are trying to determine the reasons behind their crushing electoral defeat, Democrats are already announcing how they could use their new majority to step up oversight of the Trump administration.
“Lawyer Up!” – Democrats Announce Investigations
Democratic Senator Ron Wyden of Oregon was among the first to react to the election results, hinting at the steps his party could take after taking control of the Senate.
He posted just one word on the social media platform X:
“Subpoenas.”
His message refers to the authority of congressional committees to demand documents and summon officials to hearings as part of parliamentary investigations.
Democratic Congressman Robert Garcia of California soon followed with an even more direct message:
“Lawyer up!”
These statements indicate that some Democratic representatives are prepared to use their new majority to scrutinize the actions of the Trump administration.
Democratic politicians had previously announced that, if they won a majority, they would seek hearings with current and former government officials, as well as representatives of the business sector.
However, the specific proceedings and their scope have yet to be determined.
Republicans Search for Someone to Blame for Election Defeat
While Democrats celebrate their victory, criticism of Trump and his policies is growing louder among Republicans and conservative commentators.
Republican Congressman Thomas Massie said the election result did not necessarily represent support for Democratic ideas, but rather a punishment for Republicans over their failure to deliver on promises.
According to him, Republicans lost voters’ trust because they failed to fulfill their promises to avoid new wars, put American citizens first, and prosecute those responsible for human trafficking.
Massie was particularly critical of the unfulfilled promises concerning the Jeffrey Epstein case, as well as American involvement in the war against Iran.
Former Trump Ally: He Betrayed Americans
Former Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene, once one of Trump’s most outspoken supporters, also joined the chorus of harsh criticism.
Greene said the greatest betrayal of American voters was not what Trump had failed to do, but what he had promised not to do and nevertheless went ahead with.
She recalled that his supporters had given him political and financial backing, voted for him and defended him publicly, but that, in her view, he had failed to meet their expectations.
Her criticism comes after an earlier clash with Trump, which led her to leave Congress in early 2026.
War in Iran Faces Growing Criticism
Political commentator Matt Walsh was also among the conservatives who criticized the president, describing the war against Iran as one of the biggest political mistakes of the past two decades.
Walsh believes the decision to go to war represented a betrayal of the “America First” principles on which Trump had built his political support for years.
He described the Republicans’ election defeat as a political catastrophe of historic proportions and called for a change in the party’s leadership.
In his view, no one in the Republican leadership, including the president himself, should be exempt from accountability.
What Can Democrats Do Now?
By taking control of both chambers of Congress, Democrats have secured a significantly stronger position in relation to the White House.
Congressional committees can launch investigations, demand documents, organize hearings and summon administration officials to answer questions about their work.
Such powers could open the door to closer scrutiny of certain decisions made by the Trump administration.
However, announcements of investigations do not automatically mean that criminal proceedings will be initiated, nor do they imply that any official has already been found responsible for unlawful conduct.
The new Congress is expected to begin its work on January 3, 2027, when Democrats will be able to start exercising the powers granted to them by their new congressional majority.
For Trump, who is already facing dissatisfaction from within parts of his own party, this could mean additional political pressure during the remainder of his presidential term.
