The Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, condemned today the murder of Staff Sergeant Milovan Jovanović, a member of the Serbian Armed Forces deployed in the United Nations peacekeeping mission in Lebanon (UNIFIL), who tragically lost his life during an attack on a United Nations base.

Guterres stated that since the escalation of hostilities in the region since March of this year, seven peacekeepers serving in UNIFIL have been killed, while several of them have been wounded.

“These attacks must stop,” the UN Secretary-General wrote on the X platform.

A member of the Serbian Armed Forces, Staff Sergeant Milovan Jovanović, who was deployed as part of the UN peacekeeping forces in Lebanon, passed away this morning from injuries caused by a missile striking the UN base where the peacekeeping forces are stationed, including a part of the Serbian contingent, the Ministry of Defense of Serbia announced.

As stated, Staff Sergeant Jovanović was provided with emergency medical assistance in the hospital inside the base after being wounded, and was then transported by helicopter to the university medical center in Beirut, where he passed away at around 4:00 AM local time.
