Portuguese General Raul Cunha stated that there is a big discrepancy between what he saw while serving as a UNMIK officer in Kosovo and Metohija and how the Western media reported on the situation in the southern Serbian province, writes Sputnik.

At the promotion of his book “Kosovo: Unheard-of Seizure of Independence” in Belgrade, Kunja emphasized that he wanted to show that the truth is different from what the Western media market as the truth.

A great injustice was inflicted on Serbia in Kosovo

“I wanted to explain to the international audience what were the political and economic interests of promoting a negative image of Kosovo.” If one side in the conflict in Kosovo had the right to say that it was wronged, then it was Serbia. International justice when it comes to Kosovo and Metohija has not been satisfied, and the International Court that dealt with the issues of the former Yugoslavia was very biased and deliberately oriented in such a way as to harm Yugoslavia and Serbia.”

Kunja added that his book had a third edition in Portugal, in which he also mentioned the latest events in Kosovo and Metohija.

Senator Biden on Kosovo and Metohija

The former Prime Minister of Serbia, Nikola Šainović, said that Raul Kunja’s book was part of the dissertation with which he received his doctorate and added that the author presented many documents that even he, as a former state official, did not have the opportunity to see.

“Right down to the various accompanying illustrations.” For example, when then-senator Joseph Biden gave an opening speech in 2005 at the Senate committee he was chairing. At the session called ‘Step Forward’, Biden said that Kosovo’s independence should be supported in order to explain to Islamic countries that we (Americans) are not against Muslims. For what we sometimes talk about, he gives proof here, with a date, meaning a real scientific reference.”

The Kosovo issue is not over yet

Career diplomat Zoran Milivojević assessed that the success of the book can be seen in the fact that the author managed to prove the thesis he presented in the conclusion of his work. Milivojević quoted the conclusion of Kunja’s book, stressing that the author was brave when he said something like that

“If you look impartially at the events written about in this book, in each of the parts of the book it is shown at the end, and without much surprise, that it was not the actions of the ‘evil Slobodan Milošević’ that caused the war. And that, while the war was going on, the myth created by those who intended to absolve those responsible for Western intervention, for the tragic disintegration of Yugoslavia, and for the unnecessary bloodshed in these conflicts, was exaggerated. Finally, it was the undisguised support of the USA, Great Britain, and Germany to the temporary Albanian government of Kosovo that led to the declaration of Kosovo’s independence.”

Milivojević added that Raul Cunja’s book, although it has a historical dimension, remains relevant in the future because the issue of Kosovo is not over.

The reverse side of the “humanitarian intervention” doctrine

Historian Mile Bjelajac recalled the words of American General Wesley Clark, who said that the conflict in Kosovo and Metohija did not happen because of the rights of the Albanians or because of the so-called of ethnic cleansing, but because of the arrival of the American army in that territory and the control of resources.

“The author, Mr. Kunja, in a well-structured book provides an overview of the picture of reality, or more precisely, the reverse side of the doctrine of ‘humanitarian intervention’ in these areas. He deals with propaganda, and that’s where Racak has his place, the alleged 700 killed in the Trepca mine and other examples, the role of the media, the character of the signed agreements that are not even worth the paper, as the translator translated it. This was about Resolution 1244, but the agreements with Ukraine – Minsk 1 and Minsk 2 from 2014 and 2015 – did not fare any better.”

Portuguese General Raul Cunha was a member of the European Community’s observation mission in Yugoslavia from 1991 to 1993 and later served in UNPROFOR. From 2005, he was the liaison officer of the UNMIK mission in Kosovo and Metohija, and he remained in that position for three years.

That period motivated him to write the book “Kosovo: the outrageous usurpation of Independence”.
