After a five-year hiatus, Conor McGregor returned to the UFC Octagon, but his comeback ended in disappointment as he was defeated by Max Holloway early Saturday morning in Las Vegas.

The fight ended in the very first round, with Holloway winning by technical knockout just 69 seconds into the bout.

Competing for the first time in more than five years, McGregor immediately charged across the Octagon at the opening bell, throwing a high left roundhouse kick. However, he landed awkwardly on his right knee.

After attempting two more kicks in an effort to pressure Holloway, it became clear that McGregor would not be able to continue in what had been scheduled as a five-round fight.

McGregor Used an Orthodox Hymn to Announce His Return to the Octagon

Shortly before the highly anticipated bout, which was expected to be the main event of UFC 329 in Las Vegas, McGregor shared a gallery of motivational training photos on Instagram, surprising fans with the song he chose as the background music.

The song was the famous Orthodox “Victory Hymn,” written by Bishop Nikolaj Velimirović. In recent months, the hymn has gone viral on social media, particularly in connection with combat sports.

McGregor’s determination to make a major comeback was evident not only from the song but also from the chaos he sparked during the pre-fight press conference.

During the face-off with Holloway, McGregor tried to stare him down and forcibly removed his sunglasses. The two fighters immediately moved toward each other, prompting UFC president Dana White to step between them. Holloway initially responded by offering a handshake, but McGregor refused it, and the pair once again squared up before security, acting on White’s instructions, separated them.
