The first plane carrying migrants has landed in Guantánamo Bay as part of U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration’s campaign to curb illegal immigration.

A C-17 aircraft took off from El Paso, Texas, carrying ten migrants suspected of being members of the Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua, reports ABC News.

The plane landed last night at 7:20 PM Eastern Time.

According to information from the Department of Homeland Security, the migrants will not be housed with existing detainees at Guantánamo, and their security will be handled by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

On January 29, Trump signed an executive order expanding the capacity of the Migrant Operations Center in Guantánamo Bay to accommodate migrants who are illegally residing in the U.S.

Officials have announced that Guantánamo could house up to 30,000 migrants, while Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth stated that the most dangerous criminals, such as members of Tren de Aragua, will be held in the high-security facility.

Although there have been previous reports of poor conditions for migrants in Guantánamo, officials claim that adequate facilities will be provided for the temporary stay of migrants while they await return to their home countries.
