Polling stations for the presidential elections in Belarus closed at 8:00 PM local time, and the Belarusian Central Election Commission began counting the votes, reported Belta.

According to exit polls, the incumbent president of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko, has secured a new term with approximately 87.6% of the vote. Other candidates received between one and three percent of the vote, according to the Belarusian agency.

Voter turnout by 6:00 PM local time was 81.50%, stated Elena Baldovskaya, Secretary of the Belarusian Central Election Commission.

Across the country, there were 5,325 polling stations, with 6.9 million citizens eligible to vote. Early voting was conducted in Belarus from January 21 to 25, with a turnout of 41.81%, Belta reported.

In addition to the incumbent President Lukashenko, four other candidates participated in the elections.

These include Alexander Khiznyak, Chairman of the Republican Party of Labor and Justice; Oleg Gaidukevich, Chairman of the Liberal Democratic Party of Belarus; entrepreneur Anna Kanapatskaya; and Sergey Sirankov, First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Belarus.
