The President of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Putin, stated today that after the collapse of the USSR, the West wanted to achieve geopolitical dominance over Russia.
– It became clear to Russia that it would not be respected until it declared itself a sovereign state capable of defending its future – Putin said in parts of an interview for TV Channel Russia that had not been published until now, RIA Novosti agency reports.
The Russian leader said that after the collapse of the USSR, the West decided that they would “live by rules they invented for themselves,” ignoring Russia’s interests.
– Bearing in mind that the Soviet Union ceased to exist, they proceeded from the assumption that Russia would become part of the so-called civilized world. The West decided: when there is no Soviet Union, why should we adhere to any rules towards Russia, which does not have the potential power that the Soviet Union had. Now we will live by the rules we invented for ourselves, ignoring Russia’s interests – Putin said, speaking about the contradictions between the West and Russia.
He pointed out that ideology was important in the emergence of contradictions between the West and Russia, but that these contradictions were mostly based on geopolitical interests.
