The President of the Serb National Council (SNV), Milorad Pupovac, stated today that they will persevere with the lawsuit to the Constitutional Court regarding the denial of the Independent State of Croatia (NDH) crimes in Jasenovac at a gathering held in the Croatian Parliament, and that they will turn to international organizations that care for the preservation of the memory of the victims of the Holocaust and genocide.

At the gathering, organized by the right-wing parliamentary club DOMiNO and the Croatian Sovereignists, claims were made, among other things, that “Jasenovac was not a sanatorium, but neither was it a torture chamber” and that it “was a labor camp that had master workshops and that students from all parts of the NDH voluntarily applied for apprenticeships in those workshops.” Pupovac says that holding this gathering caused great damage to the reputation of the Parliament, as well as to society and the members of the victim nations – Roma, Jews, and Serbs.

Pupovac told RTS that it is primarily important that public condemnation is heard, which has been heard to a certain extent in the previous days, and he reiterated that a lawsuit will be filed with the Constitutional Court and that they will address international organizations that care for the preservation of the memory of the victims of the Holocaust and genocide.

“What the verdicts will be, we cannot say with certainty. However, we will persevere in the lawsuit, and we will persevere in ensuring that the voice of justice is heard, regardless of whether it will be heard in Croatian courts or outside Croatia,” Pupovac said.

Speaking about the views presented in the Parliament, Pupovac said that it is about the extreme right that, as he stated, seeks to gain political points, continue the denial and relativization of Ustaše crimes, and affirm the NDH as democratic and humane.

Commenting on the statement by Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenković that the roundtable was a political provocation by the parties that organized it, Pupovac said that the problem with the Croatian political scene is that it approaches minorities, the past, the camps, and the crimes of the NDH from a political perspective and with calculations about the influence on voters.

“The key parties and leading people of Croatia should state what is true, which is that the Ustaše movement, the regime, and the NDH were criminal in their nature and actions and that they left behind traces that can be compared to the traces in the camps of Nazi and fascist states,” Pupovac said.

The gathering in the Parliament, held on October 28, provoked public outrage due to statements that downplayed the number of victims and denied the crimes of the Ustaše regime in the Jasenovac camp.
