Students in Blockadeannounced today, after the Serbian government adopted a reasoned proposal to dissolve Parliament and sent it to Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić so that he could call early parliamentary elections, that the decision to call the elections is now up to Vučić, accompanied by the message “President, you are finally in charge.”
“The President of the Republic now has 72 hours to decide on the government’s proposal. If he dissolves the National Assembly, he simultaneously calls parliamentary elections,” the students announced on their website blokade.org.
From the moment the elections are called until they are held, as they stated, at least 45 and no more than 60 days must pass, while the deadlines for submitting electoral lists, collecting signatures and all other actions necessary for conducting the elections also begin to run once the elections are called.
They added that students have been demanding early parliamentary elections for more than a year, for as long as the authorities have been ignoring that demand.
“For so long they ignored, rejected and declared the calling of elections impossible. Today, the procedure has been initiated. (Prime Minister Đuro) Macut made the first move. The government has done its part. And now, President – you are in charge. You have 72 hours. After that – students win,” they said in their statement.
