Serbian citizen Alon Ohel (24), who was captured by Hamas at the Nova music festival in Israel on October 7, 2023, managed to send a message to his family from captivity. His family received a sign that he is alive, but his health is deteriorating.

Almost 500 days after he was abducted by terrorists in southern Israel while hiding with a group of people in a roadside shelter, Ohel managed to send a message to his family from a tunnel in Gaza where he is being held.

According to his mother, Idit Ohel, Alon sent a birthday card to his sister Inbar through prisoners who were released last Saturday. Alon turned 24 on Monday and celebrated his second birthday in captivity.

On the day of the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, Alon was at the Supernova music festival. When the nightmare began around 6:30 am, he managed to escape by car with friends, but terrorists were shooting from all directions.

They fled to a public shelter, from where Alon sent his last message to his family at 8:08 am. However, the terrorists came to the shelter and threw grenades inside. Alon was kidnapped along with the others.

Although Alon’s mother is overjoyed to know that her son is alive, the knowledge of the conditions of his captivity is almost unbearable, says Idit Ohel.

“Alon is in the tunnels all the time. He doesn’t see sunlight, he doesn’t know the difference between day and night,” the mother told Reuters.

Alon has several untreated injuries.

“He can no longer see out of his right eye from a shrapnel. He has also been chained for more than a year,” his father Kobi Ohel told Israeli media.

Released Hamas hostages told them that his son and others “have to live on half to a whole pita bread a day.”

Idit Ohel demands that the second phase of the agreement between Israel and Hamas be implemented without interruption and says that she feels abandoned by Netanyahu’s government.

“No one has contacted us since we received this terrible news. It is very, very sad. Everyone must be released immediately. If there is a delay in the agreement, they will not survive, they will die,” Idit said.

In addition to Serbian citizenship, Alon also has Israeli and German citizenship. His grandmother Tzipi Ohel, who was born in Berlin, survived the Holocaust. After the war, she came to Israel by boat in 1949.

She says that she wakes up every day and thinks that a miracle will happen today and that her grandson will return.

“But it hasn’t happened yet,” she said.
