Police in Minnesota have arrested the man who on Saturday shot and killed Democratic Congresswoman Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, ABC News reported, citing Reuters. ABC News stated that the man was apprehended near his farm close to Green Isle, Minnesota.
The county sheriff’s office posted a photo on social media showing the arrest of the suspected assailant, 57-year-old Vance Luther Belter.
“The face of evil. After tireless and determined police work, the killer is now in custody. Thanks to the dedication of multiple agencies working together, with community support, we are one step closer to justice,” the sheriff’s office statement read.
Belter is suspected of killing the Democratic congresswoman from Minnesota and her husband on Saturday, disguised as a police officer, in a suspected “politically motivated murder,” and wounding another congressman and his wife.
The FBI and local police had since launched a massive manhunt for the attacker, who fled on foot after firing at police and abandoning a vehicle where officers found a manifesto and a list of other lawmakers and officials.
The killing of Congresswoman Hortman and her husband has sparked outrage from Republican and Democratic politicians nationwide, with calls for a reduction in harsh political rhetoric.
