A member of the medical team defending General Ratko Mladić, cardiologist Dr. Ognjen Gudelj, said today at a press conference at the UNS Press Center that General Mladić was killed in the prison hospital in Scheveningen through the deliberate inaction and neglect of medical staff.

“After so many years of treating General Mladić, with great regret I must say something I thought I would never utter: what Darko Mladić said is true — General Mladić was killed at the Hague Tribunal. He was killed through the inaction of doctors and medical staff at the detention hospital in Scheveningen,” Dr. Gudelj said.

“They refused to measure his blood pressure and draw blood”

Dr. Gudelj explained in detail all the ways in which the staff in The Hague neglected the health of General Mladić, who was a seriously ill cardiac and kidney patient, as well as a diabetic.

“When you do not measure the blood pressure or draw blood from a cardiac patient with chronic renal insufficiency for a month, while giving him toxic medications that are excreted through the kidneys, that is de facto a deliberate and premeditated murder. When I asked why they were not measuring his blood pressure or drawing blood, they told me: ‘We decided to spare him the pain.’ They also discontinued his diabetes medication on their own initiative,” Gudelj emphasized, adding that they eventually even admitted that the facility did not have a blood-pressure monitor at all.

Administration of fentanyl and kidney failure

Describing the actions of the doctors in The Hague as being absolutely contrary to all global and European medical protocols, Gudelj also revealed what kind of treatment the general received before his death.

“I brought out a medication list from the Hague Tribunal showing that, in addition to the patches, they were administering sublingual doses of fentanyl to him the entire time. Fentanyl is a powerful narcotic whose metabolites are excreted through the kidneys and can lead to cessation of urination. At that point, his kidneys had already stopped functioning, and it was only a matter of days before his life would end,” the doctor warned.

Gudelj ultimately stated that he wanted to file a lawsuit against the doctors from Scheveningen, but that lawyers told him the Hague doctors were legally protected and operated as a “court above the courts.”
