Mihailo Šestović left the city bustle, packed his bags, and bought a house in the countryside, pointing out that he is starting a completely new life – far from the noise, stress, and everyday rush. His story, which he documents on social media, became viral in a short time and attracted enormous public attention.

His video, in which he shows the property and explains his plans, triggered an avalanche of comments and messages of support, but also opened a broader discussion about life in the city and the countryside.

“There isn’t a single house for a kilometer”

Mihailo described where he will live and what awaits him without sugarcoating:

“I decided to move to the village. And that over there is the house where I will live. The last house in the village. There isn’t a single house nearby for a kilometer, in untouched nature. And those way over there, those are the nearest neighbors.”

The house he plans to move into has been empty for more than a decade, which is why serious work awaits him.

“No one has lived in it for over 10 years, so I will have a lot of work. The water issue needs to be solved, three-phase electricity needs to be brought in, everything inside and everything outside needs to be renovated. A normal road needs to be made. So there will be a lot of work, but that is exactly what this whole series is dedicated to.”

“In the city, all seasons are the same”

In one of the posts, Mihailo particularly emphasized the difference between urban and natural life:

“It always annoyed me that in the city, all seasons are somehow the same. The only difference is whether I turn on the radiator or the air conditioner. On the other hand, rain, snow, sun, wind, everything has its own flavor and charm when you are in nature. In the city, I don’t care what happens outside. And that is sad.”

Speaking about the rhythm of life, he added:

“Everything in nature has its own rhythm. And we can either adapt to it or vainly try to go against it.”

“Everything is available to us at a click”

Mihailo also reflected on the modern way of life, emphasizing that this is exactly what further motivates him to change:

“Everything is available to us at a click. We have become very lazy. We have snuggled too much into that comfort. I don’t want to live in an apartment and have everything at a click. I want to have to hustle to get through the winter. I want to have to hustle to provide those existential things. I want to produce as much of my own food as possible, rather than buying everything at the store.”

He also added what particularly makes him happy:

“I look forward to planting a fruit tree, putting in a lot of effort, and finally reaping the fruits of my labor. Both figuratively and literally.”

Expansion of followers: from 1,300 to more than 108,000

His story did not go unnoticed on social media either. Mihailo pointed out that just a month before February he had 1,300 followers, only to reach over 80,000 in February, while now he counts more than 108,000.

Such growth in followers is accompanied by his stance on popularity:

“In a time of superficial values, full of people who consciously chase fame and popularity, my goal is to be everything opposite of that. I want to be an ordinary guy sharing his story in the hope that it will inspire someone. I’m not here to pretend to be something I’m not and to chase praise and pats on the back. I’m here to share my story, raw and real, and to try to inspire others through that very process, but also for me to personally progress and grow as a person.”

Support, but also criticism

And while many support his move, certain comments open up a different angle:

“I’ll sound like a hater now, but realistically it’s strange to me how this type of story is being forced… Today, no one has returned to the village because life there is easier.” “Whoever is truly happy in the village and strives for it, has no need for YouTube, TikTok, or Instagram.” “A fame is being created as if someone performed a miracle by going to live in the village.”
