The Montenegrin Handball Federation has decided to issue a statement following the unpleasant scenes at the First League handball match between Berane and Lovćen (22:26). The home fans interrupted the match three times.

The fans from Berane interrupted the match, and the visitors were even pelted with glass bottles at the very end. Some fans wanted to physically confront the visiting players, but fortunately, this was prevented.

During the match, various chants could be heard from the stands, and some of them drew a lot of attention.

“The match was interrupted three times, and from the stands of the Sports Center in Berane, chants could be heard for Serbia, Kosovo, and Draža Mihailović,” RTV Cetinje reported.

In the end, the Federation also spoke out.

“The Montenegrin Handball Federation addresses the public regarding the events at the seventh round match of the First Men’s League between Berane 1949 and Lovćen, which was played on Saturday in Berane.

The Federation strongly condemns the unacceptable, chauvinistic chants and messages from the stands directed at the visiting team, which are absolutely inappropriate not only in sports but also in society as a whole.

We are pleased that the hall was full to the last seat and that there was a fair and sporting atmosphere on the court between the players of both teams and the officials. However, the behavior of the fans ruined the overall impression of the derby and diminished the significance of the quality handball shown on the court.

It should be noted that the handball clubs Berane 1949 and Lovćen have a long history of excellent mutual relations.

Incidents such as throwing objects onto the field, attempts by individual fans to enter the field, and the use of pyrotechnics in the hall cannot be tolerated.

Such organizational failures require a penalty for the match organizer, which the Federation’s bodies will decide on in the coming days, in accordance with the provisions of the Competition Regulations and the Rules on Disciplinary and Material Liability.

The Montenegrin Handball Federation will continue to strive to strengthen fair play, sportsmanship, and safety at matches, and we appeal to all clubs and fans to contribute to the improvement of handball and sports in general with their behavior,” the statement of the Montenegrin Handball Federation said, as reported by “Vijesti.”
