The trial of Brian Walsh, accused of murdering his wife Ana Walsh, is currently underway, with the court reviewing four interviews he gave to police. Brian Walsh’s lawyer admitted that he lied to officers when he claimed he hadn’t gone to the hardware store, while the investigating officer was particularly struck by a large hole in the ceiling of the couple’s bedroom.

Walsh is charged with first-degree murder of his wife Ana, who went missing at the beginning of 2023 on New Year’s Day. Although he admitted to disposing of her body and misleading the police, he continues to deny killing her.

Walsh reportedly panicked and tried to hide the body

Inspector Harrison Smith, who participated in the investigation and interviewed Brian Walsh four times, testified during the trial. He noted that a large hole in the ceiling of the Walsh home drew his attention, further raising suspicion about the version of events the accused provided to police, NBC Boston reports. Smith said he spent about 30 minutes walking through the house before checking a Volvo vehicle, where he noticed a plastic liner in the trunk.

Prosecutors claim Walsh searched online for ways to dispose of a body, and cleaning supplies and surveillance footage indicate attempts to cover it up. Parts of the body were allegedly found in containers throughout the area.

The defense argues that Ana Walsh died suddenly and that Walsh, in a panic, tried to hide the body. Their goal is to prove there was no premeditation. During today’s trial, prosecutors plan to present evidence including digital traces and video material, while the defense seeks to challenge the existence of evidence for premeditated murder.

Delayed missing person report due to Ana’s anger

Walsh explained at a hearing on January 5, 2023, why he waited so long to report his wife missing. Without being asked, he said he hadn’t raised the alarm sooner because Ana was upset that he had called friends and family a week earlier trying to find her after she missed a Christmas flight to Massachusetts.

Brian admitted he delayed too long and should have acted a day earlier. Prosecutors noted in their opening statement that Ana’s disappearance was reported by her company.

Multiple times, Walsh said “no” when investigators asked if Ana had ever spoken about suicide, according to footage played in court.

He also stated that Geim Mutlu, who was in the Walsh household, told him Ana had said she was stressed but would seek psychiatric help. Walsh claimed it was the first time he had heard of it.

“Ana was dead in bed”

Brian Walsh reportedly found his wife dead in their bed, according to his defense attorney Larry Tipton. The lawyer referenced Google searches Brian Walsh conducted starting January 1, explaining that Walsh performed these searches as he “struggled with the fact that Ana Walsh was dead.”

Detailed account of the days before Ana’s disappearance

Walsh provided prosecutors with a detailed timeline of the days and hours before he last saw Ana Walsh.

He said Ana told him she felt unwell on December 30 upon returning to Cohasset from Washington. Walsh told investigators that on New Year’s Eve, Ana mentioned an emergency at work that required her to return to Washington early the next morning. He said Ana woke him up so they could say goodbye early on January 1, and their young son also said goodbye to Ana just before she left to get into a car headed to the airport.
