The renowned Croatian writer Vedrana Rudan died at the age of 77 after a long and serious illness. She will be remembered for her outstanding works, columns and sharp tongue that often left people speechless, but she always stood by her views – even at the cost of facing consequences because of them.
She also took the side of Serbian tennis player Novak Đoković, who was deported from Australia in January 2022 in the now well-known case that the entire world followed for three weeks. In the end, even though Đoković was initially allowed to remain in the country and participate in the Australian Open, the minister ordered his deportation. He was treated like a criminal, held in inhumane conditions, and then escorted to the airport and sent to Dubai.
The Croatian writer Vedrana Rudan commented on the situation in which the Serbian star found himself. On her blog, she published a text titled “Commonwealth Australia,” in which she fiercely criticized the authorities’ decision to deport Novak.
How did Rudan defend Novak Đoković?
She revealed what bothered her about the whole story, asked why nobody was dealing with the case of Rafael Nadal and raised the issue of a member of the royal family who would probably have been able to enter the country without any problems, despite allegations against him of sexually abusing minors.
“I don’t know what is happening to Đoković as I write this, in the cradle of democracy. Is he in detention, in prison, hanged, released, expelled, spat upon, or simply handcuffed and put on a plane? Why am I on Đoković’s side even though I’m a crazy vaccine enthusiast? I don’t understand tennis, my only connection to tennis is Nikola Pilić, our dear longtime family friend. But Nikola, Niki Pilić, has always been something more than tennis. I have never met a more measured, honest, noble and honorable man in my life. Today he told me: ‘They gave him a visa, then took his visa away. They are treating him like a criminal. It’s all a political farce.’”
“What bothers me about this story? First of all, the facts. Did Đoković get vaccinated twice? No. Did the Commonwealth of Australia insist that no one was allowed to set foot in that cradle of democracy unless they had been vaccinated twice with ‘a certain vaccine’? Yes. Did the Commonwealth of Australia contradict itself and welcome Đoković despite the fact that he did not comply with what the Commonwealth had sworn by ever since the Chinese or dear God handed us the coronavirus? Yes. Did that same Commonwealth of Australia turn a blind eye to Nadal even though he also did not comply with the established rules? Yes. Who is talking about that? It’s not the same? It is the same story. It’s about principle. When a country considers itself the cradle of democracy, Nadal should not be an exception either, no matter how much he is not a ‘Balkan man,’” Vedrana Rudan added at the time.
“To you, Novak is a savage”
“Why do I emphasize that Australia is called the Commonwealth of Australia? It’s important. The head of that something currently screaming about democracy and respect for the law is Elizabeth II. That lady, whom some call the most powerful woman in the world, has a son named Andrew who has long been the world’s most famous alleged sexual predator of minors.”
“Have the leaders of Australia ever spoken out on that subject? Prince Andrew, instead of spending his days in prison alongside people like himself, sits in a palace and waits for the Australian Open. The crazy English Prime Minister Johnson recently renovated his den with money given to him by a local tycoon. The question of all questions is: does Johnson behave like a ‘Balkan man,’ or do we ‘Balkan people,’ when we are at our worst, behave like Johnson?”
“You think these two failures have nothing to do with Đoković? They do, they do.”
“To Westerners, Đoković is a savage who needs to be shown what democracy is. The crook and the alleged rapist need neither to be shown nor proved anything. They know very well that there is no difference between their democracy and fascism.”
“Đoković, if you were a prince, a rapist of little girls, a criminal prime minister, or a prime minister who fights for a new term by stepping over the corpse of an athlete, all roads would be open to you, all your visas would be valid. But this way… This way you are merely a symbol of those, and they are not few, who understand that the world is divided into ‘wild Balkan people’ and ‘civilized’ criminals,” Croatian writer Vedrana Rudan wrote in conclusion.
