Legendary Swiss tennis player Roger Federer returned to the US Open to play an exhibition match, while his former great rival, Novak Djokovic, is still considered a favorite to win the title. Following the retirements of Federer and Rafael Nadal, the Serbian star managed to settle the GOAT race in his favor, as in addition to his 24 Grand Slam and 40 Masters titles, he continues to push the boundaries of longevity on the ATP Tour.

Federer praised him for that, admitting that he had expected Djokovic to “decline” earlier. The Serbian is still at the very top of world tennis, keeping pace with the younger generation, and at the US Open he will have a very good chance to reach the long-awaited absolute record and lift his 25th major trophy.

What are the Swiss player’s feelings when Djokovic is called the greatest of all time? “I’m perfectly fine with that. What he has done is incredible. It’s astonishing what he has managed to do even now. I thought we might see a much bigger decline in form, but last year he played in four Grand Slam semifinals, and this year he has once again been very strong,” Federer said.

What is particularly impressive is how he manages to maintain his form despite playing very few tournaments. “Honestly, it’s fascinating to watch how he manages to stay in shape – he plays less and less, yet he still manages to endure and keep going.”

Djokovic recorded the best results of his career on hard courts, but over the years he managed to become one of the best players on grass and clay as well, which is precisely why he surpassed his greatest rivals.

“He is an incredible player who has proven himself not only on hard courts, but also on grass and clay. Throughout his career, he improved so many things and corrected weaknesses he previously had in his game. What he has achieved is astonishing – I extend my greatest congratulations to him.”

Federer Doesn’t Count Djokovic Out

Despite the fact that Djokovic has not won a title since the 2023 US Open, Federer does not count him out of the title race. As he says, as long as he is in the draw, a champion like him has a chance.

“I think that whenever Novak appears at a tournament, and especially at a Grand Slam, he will always have a chance to win the title. That’s my opinion. I have tremendous respect for Novak and I’ve had the opportunity to see what he can do. Not just once, not just here or there, but everywhere and at the highest possible level. That’s why I always think that as long as he is in the draw, there is a chance,” Federer said and continued:

“I think that’s one of the reasons he still plays, because he truly loves tennis. He believes he can still win major titles, and I think so too. I haven’t watched the documentary yet.”
