The new coach of Crvena zvezda, Saša Obradović, appeared before the media for the first time in his new mandate and stated that he believes in his work, team spirit, and the support of the fans, but also that it will take time to establish the system he wants to build.
Obradović will debut on the red-and-white bench on Tuesday against Žalgiris as part of the EuroLeague double round, while on Friday Zvezda will host Real Madrid in the Belgrade Arena.
„I believe in myself and what I do, that in this short time I can give confidence to all the players. A lot is new, both systematically and in approach, so I need to adapt to the team, and the players need to adapt to me. It will take time, that is for sure,” Obradović said in his first address.
Obradović pointed out that he has already talked to almost all the players in a short period and emphasized the importance of personal communication and connection within the team:
“The most important thing is understanding and connection on the court. The model I want to establish is the one from Istanbul – a strong connection between the bench and the players. That is my task now, in a situation that is not easy.”
The injury to Tyson Carter is a big blow, but the new strategist says he will not rush to bring in reinforcements:
“Without him, we have to manage and believe in the existing team. Players should not be brought in just for the sake of numbers – they must have quality and be competitive. We are considering a few names and will narrow down the list soon.”
Saša Obradović, known for his strong connection with Zvezda, spoke openly about the emotions that his return carries:
“Maybe we are missing one player on paper, but I expect that one in the form of our fans – the best in the world. Emotions are there, but we must control them. The players and I must be focused only on victories. To cry – maybe it would be easier. But now I am only thinking about the game.”
He commented on the injured players.
“Dobrić and Plavšić are on their way back, working individually, day by day. The situation with Devonte Graham is uncertain, we will see when he will be able to return.”
Then he spoke about the match with Žalgiris.
“Žalgiris is playing perhaps the best basketball in the EuroLeague. They have a pronounced team spirit, great chemistry, and consistency. They enter the season prepared every year. We have had a few setbacks now, but I believe we will push through and get all the players fit.”
He pointed out that Tomislav Tomović remains in the professional staff.
“Not only will Tomović stay, but I expect us to work together well. I give importance to all assistants – I do not want only Zvezda and I to profit, but to create new coaching staff through work. I already have experience with coaches who later worked independently, and I hope it will be the case now as well.”
