The U.S. Coast Guard rescued a man who was clinging to a refrigerator while floating approximately 50 kilometers from shore after Hurricane Milton hit Florida.
Rescuers were lowered from a helicopter and swam to the man who was kneeling on the refrigerator in the Gulf of Mexico.
The man was transported to Tampa General Hospital where he received medical treatment.
“He survived something that is a nightmare scenario even for the most experienced mariner”, said Lieutenant Dana Gradi of the U.S. Coast Guard.
“To understand the severity of the hurricane conditions, it’s important to say that we estimate he experienced winds of 120 to 145 kilometers per hour. He survived thanks to a life jacket, an emergency position indicating radio beacon, and the refrigerator”, she said.
