Lazar Dinić, a student, Revolt journalist, and activist of the Stav group, who was seriously injured during the local elections on March 29 in Bor, has successfully undergone surgery and is recovering, the Association of Independent Electronic Media (ANEM) announced today.
The Association pointed out that it is important on Good Friday to remind ourselves of the “attempted murder” of journalist Lazar Dinić, and the severe beating of photographer Zorica Popović and journalist Ivan Bjelić in Šarbanovac near Bor, while they were covering the local elections on March 29.
“Lazar Dinić underwent surgery yesterday at the Clinic for Maxillofacial Surgery. Doctors say it was successful. He is recovering from the operation. He feels well, as much as that is possible. He cannot see out of one eye. In addition to physical injuries, there are also mental ones, from which Lazar, Zorica, and Ivan will be recovering for a long time,” ANEM stated.
All three gave detailed statements to the competent prosecutor of the Basic Public Prosecutor’s Office in Bor, Saša Milošević, as well as to police officers. The prosecutor announced that he transformed all the knowledge he received into a request for the collection of information for police operational workers and expects them to carry out investigative actions, check and confirm the information obtained, and transform them into a criminal complaint.
In the meantime, ANEM adds, the prosecutor will conduct an expert evaluation of the data on injuries, diagnoses, and health conditions, so that he can clearly define the criminal offense.
The President of the Board of Directors of ANEM, Veran Matić, called on the competent authorities to stop the violence being committed daily against citizens and for the perpetrators to be identified and sanctioned.
He also called on the European Commission to sanction authorities that do not work on improving the rule of law, those who have completely dismantled the legal system in favor of organized crime and thugs.
“Violence against journalists and the silencing of media in such a drastic way as is being done today in Serbia, we remember from the worst years of Milošević’s rule when the current president of Serbia was the minister of information. We must not allow a ‘déjà vu’ that ended with the brutal silencing of media and the murder of Slavko Ćuruvija,” Matić added.
