The government of the United States of America has added more questions to the civics test that candidates must pass to become US citizens, which is the latest step by the administration of US President Donald Trump towards tightening the legal immigration process, CBS News reports today.
This move will reinstate the 2020 test, from the first Trump administration, which was abolished by President Joseph Biden’s administration.
Among other requirements, legal immigrants applying for US citizenship must prove that they have lived in the US as legal permanent residents for at least three or five years, depending on their case, that they can read, write, and speak English, and that they have a basic understanding of American history and the political system.
According to the new version of the test, candidates will have to study 128 questions about US history and politics and correctly answer 12 out of 20 questions orally.
Those who fail the test get a second chance to pass it, and if they do not pass it the second time, their application for citizenship will be rejected.
The new test will be applied to those who submit citizenship applications after mid-October, according to the US Citizenship and Immigration Services, the federal agency that reviews the applications of potential citizens.
