Early this morning, an air alert was declared across Ukraine, and the population was instructed to take shelter. Andriy Yermak, the chief advisor to President Zelensky, took to social media to warn that “Putin has just launched a missile attack on Kyiv.”
Kyiv city authorities posted on Telegram: “Explosions in the city. Air defense is active. Stay in shelters!”
According to the Ukrainian military, Russia has carried out a combined attack for the first time in over two months, using cruise and ballistic missiles launched from strategic bombers. The Ukrainian Air Force reported that six Tu-95MS aircraft took off towards Ukraine, according to Ukrinform.
Video of Shahed flying close to my area in the west of Kyiv. Anti-aircraft guns were audible here too. Reports this Shahed was shot down. Second wave of cruise missiles never materialized. Tu-95s have refueled and are returning to base in north Russia, monitors say. pic.twitter.com/78G08GWrtK

According to the BBC, Russian Tu-95 bombers launched about six waves of cruise missiles targeting locations across Ukraine.
Explosions were heard in the eastern part of Kyiv, where a thick cloud of smoke was visible above one site. It is still unclear whether the missiles hit their targets or if the smoke was the result of Ukrainian air defense efforts. Two Shahed-type combat drones were also observed over the southern part of the city.

It is worth recalling that on August 26, Russia launched a major attack on Ukraine, using over 200 drones and missiles, resulting in seven deaths and hitting energy facilities across the country. Kyiv described that attack as the “largest of the war.”
